Key Attributes of a Poker Player

Not everyone can be a great poker player. I believe that almost anyone has the capacity to be a good poker player but not everyone has the ability to be that shark at the table. There are just certain characteristics that a poker player must embody if they are to be great. Some of these can be learned but others a player must just be born with. This is hard for some players to accept but that is just the way it is. In this article I will quickly go over just what exactly it is that a poker player must embody to be great.

The first thing a poker player must have is intelligence. Obviously this is something that you most likely must be born with. A poker player has to be able to compute a ton of different pieces of information on any given hand before he can make a logical decisions. They have to be able to have innate knowledge and feelings for statistics and probability. This can be seen on any professional poker circuit. There are plenty of pros who are former ivy league dropouts and intellectuals wunderkinds.

The second must be emotional control. Poker is a lot like a roller coaster. There are going to be times when you catch cards and you are overflowing with excitement and joy. There are going to be other times when you run into incredibly bad beats, or a player who just canít keep their mouth shut, and your going to be fuming. You have to be able to keep these emotions in control and they canít effect your decision making. Everyone who has every played poker has ran into that player on tilt who will literally self-destruct right before your very eyes.

A great poker player must also have the attributes of discipline and patience. You have to be able to stick to your game plan even when the cards arenít falling your way. This can be very frustrating and hard for many players to do. You feel like if you aren't winning you must be doing something wrong and this simply isn't the case. I think this is one of the attributes that can be improved with time if you consciously work at it.
